Here’s a thought: before your next guest checks in, you should.
Yes, really. Pack an overnight bag, pick up your favorite snacks, and spend the night in your own Airbnb like a regular guest. No clipboard, no to-do list. Just you, the space, and 24 hours to notice what your guests experience.
At Comfort by Marni, we’ve stayed in Airbnbs across the country—from chic city apartments to quiet cabins tucked in the woods—and we’ve noticed a pattern:
Hosts who spend time in their own spaces create the most memorable stays.
Here’s Why It Matters
There are things a cleaner or property manager will never catch, like:
That electrical outlet behind the bed that's impossible to reach unless you're part octopus
A shower curtain that clings to you like a damp hug from a ghost
Multiple TV remotes but no instructions… or worse, a universal remote that isn’t so universal
Nowhere to hang your towel without dripping all over the floor
Lights that require a scavenger hunt to turn off once you're tucked in
These aren’t big problems. But when a guest encounters five of them in one stay? They remember.
Think Like a Guest
Try this challenge: spend one night and one full day in your property and do everything a guest might.
Brew coffee. Is it easy to find the filters? Is the kettle intuitive?
Take a shower. Is the water pressure good? Is the bathroom stocked well?
Settle in for a movie. Do the remotes make sense? Are there clear instructions?
Crawl into bed. Can you charge your phone? Read a book comfortably? Feel relaxed?
Let yourself notice what’s missing—not just in terms of utility, but in warmth.
Add the Magic Touches
Great reviews don’t come from granite countertops or fancy throw pillows. They come from thoughtfulness.
A book on the nightstand that makes you want to stay up late
A cozy throw blanket within arm’s reach of the couch
A welcome card and a local snack that says, “You’re not just another guest”
These moments don’t have to cost much. They just have to be felt.
